5/11/2023 0 Comments Angels in america part oneWith its sumptuous costuming (Oana Botez), ritual-inviting set design (Maruti Evans), and multi-layered staging, it is by turns disorienting, devastating, and exhilarating. This production of Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches is a mind-boggling and breathtaking panoramic spectacle, part circus and part nightmare. Written by one Jewish man (Tony Kushner) and directed by another (János Szász), Arena Stage’s production of the play is concerned with the process of wrestling with what is often called God and how choosing to engage in that wrestling or trying to avoid it affects our covenant with our fellow human beings. The play was an indictment of America’s cruel abandonment of those of its citizens who were affected by the disease AIDS. Angels in America burst onto the theatrical scene and into national consciousness at The Public Theater in 1991 and, two years later, moved to Broadway. 5/11/2023 0 Comments Drizzt do urden the crystal shardHe promptly changed his major from computerscience to journalism. Deacon is a tough character to understand throughout most of the book and Cassidy's willingness to trust him so completely is a little hard to accept, but overall, this was a good entry in the Unfinished Hero series. Cassidy trusts him more than most women would for an extended period of time and pays the price. There is a lot of build up in this story as to why Deacon is so very detached from life. After six years of coming and going from cabin 11, Deacon and Cassidy finally give in to their attraction, but will Cassidy be satisfied with a man who only visits occasionally and won't tell her anything about himself? Deacon is a cold, quiet, unreachable man, but when he comes to the cabins in the woods that Cassidy is restoring, he finds her fighting with her boyfriend and decides to stay in cabin 11. And as the needles clack, and the garments grow, the conversation moves on from patterns and yarn to life, love and everything. Here is the synopsis:Ĭasting on! It starts almost by accident: the women who buy their knitting needles and wool from Georgia’s store linger for advice, for a coffee, for a chat and before they know it, every Friday night is knitting night. Jacobs turned out to be a great writer, and I will definitely be looking out for her work. I thoroughly enjoyed this book: The Friday Night Knitting Club. There is a strong story, great characters and a bit of knitting that made this a lovely, exciting read. However, it is too well written to be classed as that. I picked this book to read as a quick, chick-lit book. 5/10/2023 0 Comments If You Find Me by Emily MurdochIF YOU FIND ME, a Carnegie Medal 2014 longlister and a Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2014 finalist, is also a YALSA BFYA selection of 2014, has earned starred reviews from Booklist, Kirkus, and School Library Journal, was named a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice for June 2013, an Irish Times Editors’ Pick for 2013, an Editor’s Pick for UK’s The Bookseller 2013, a Booklist Youth Editors' Choice for 2013, and a Booklist Top Ten Pick of 2014. But there is more, and Penelope is the one who hears the true storyor is it? Goddard ( Past Caring ) has crafted a marvelously intricate plot, deftly and subtly unveiling, through different narrative voices, the mystery at the core of this intense, shocking tale. Young Leonora eventually escapes to a happy marriage and finally discovers the truth about her parentsespecially about her mother, who had been described to her as a whorethrough the device of a stranger's tale: not an ancient mariner's, but an old soldier's. This seller consistently earned 5-star reviews, shipped on time, and replied quickly to any messages they. By way of explanation, Leonora relates the story of her childhood as an orphan in the mansion of Meonsgate sp ok in Hampshire, under the tyranny of her greedy, power-hungry step-grandmother. Her father, Captain John Hallows is listed there, but, Leonora points out, he died more than a year before her birth. In the prologue, the younger Leonora, now a grandmother, takes her daughter Penelope to France to visit the memorial to those killed on the Somme in 1916. Set in England during and after WW I, this is the story of three generations: the two Leonoras, mother and child (and their husbands, both handsome, adoring, young army officers), and of Penelope, who at length unravels the twisted skeins of her mother's and grandmother's past to discover herself. Ostensibly, this book explores rape and the effects of rape or sexual assault on victims, but what I read was a four year journey of self-destruction and recklessness on the part of the main character. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, and while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart. Told in four parts-freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year-this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she knows she’s supposed to tell someone what happened but she can’t. What she thought she knew to be true, is now lies. What Eden once loved-who she once loved-she now hates. But the night her brother’s best friend rapes her, Eden’s world capsizes. Starting high school didn’t change who she was. |
